Chana dal fry recipe with step by step photos: - spicy Bengal gram split curry recipe is one of my favorite that I have learned from my neighbor aunt.
Chana dal is nothing but a brown chickpea which is split and polished. You can make this recipe with any varieties of dal like pigeon peas splits or splits yellow peas.
I think the recipe I am following here is typical Punjabi style as I have learned this recipe from my neighbor Punjabi aunty. I have never heard of this recipe before.
I am Dal-chawal lover and my husband is totally opposite so we usually to have full thali meal almost everyday in our dinner. so that i always keep wondering recipes which suit our taste.
Chana dal has a nutty flavor and powdered form of chana dal is known as besan.
Chana dal goes best with steamed rice , raita and roti/paratha.. while preparing chana dal ,make sure that dal is soft enough.
you can soak dal for an hour before boiling. You can use a pressure cooker to boil dal and can even use a pan but it takes time.I always use a pressure cooker to boil dal.

Chana dal fry recipe-how to make easy chana dal
Ingredients
- 1 cup chana dal / bengal gram split
- salt to taste
- 2 cups water, to boil dal
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 4-5 garlic, minced
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- ½ teaspoon ginger paste
- 1 small green chilli
- ¼ teaspoon mustard seeds
- ¼ teaspoon cumins/jeera
- 1 tablespoon Oil
- 4 nos curry leaves
- fresh coriander, chopped
- a pinch of asafoetida / hing
Instructions
- soak chana dal for 15-20 mins in water if you have plenty time.Otherwise directly transfer chana dal in pressure cooker. add water in cooker.
- boil dal in pressure cooker for 3-4 whistles on medium flame. keep the boil dal aside.
- heat oil in kadai.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds.when they crackle add asafoetida/hing.
- Add curry leaves and garlic cloves. saute it for a while.
- add onion, ginger, and chili. saute it for a while.
- add tomato,salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder and coriander powder.Mix well.
- cook the mixture for 2-3 mins OR until mixture is smooth enough.
- Add boil dal and mix well.Boil the dal for 4-5 mins on medium flame.
- sprinkle some coriander and serve hot.
Notes
- soak dal for 15-20 mins at-least for best results.
- you can sprinkle some garam masala as well.it's your choice.i am not adding it.
