The original restaurant style recipe uses tomato paste or finely chopped tomatoes.But somehow, I like to have tomato chunks in my dal recipes which is clearly visible in pictures as well.

Yellow dal fry recipe, how to make moong dal fry restaurant style
Ingredients
- 1 cup moong dal, soaked
- 2 cups water, to boil dal
- salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon cumins / jeera
- a pinch of asafoetida / hing
- 2 tablespoon ginger-chili-garlic paste
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoon Clarified butter / ghee
- fresh coriander, for garnishing
Instructions
- Wash your moong dal in running water and put it in a pressure cooker.
- Add 2 cups water in pressure cooker and allow to boil it for 3-4 whistles on medium flame.
- keep the dal aside.Heat ghee in Kadai.
- Add cumins. When they crackle, add asafoetida(Hing).
- Add ginger-chili-garlic paste and saute it for a while.
- Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and salt.
- Mix it well. Cook the mixture until tomatoes are softened.
- Add boiled dal.
- Cook the mixture for 5-7 mins on medium flame.keep stirring.
- Garnish with coriander. Serve hot.
