Sambar is one of the very famous Indian recipe and it is totally INCOMPLETE if sambar powder is not added into that.sambar powder is an important ingredient found in South Indian kitchens. It is prepared by roasting and grinding various types of Indian spices.

Nothing can beat a homemade spice mix. Perfect combinations of warm spices that adds great authentic flavor to sambar without adding too much heat. A thought always crosses our minds – why bother to make homemade when we can find one in stores? Well, the answer is simple – IT’S HOMEMADE, No preservatives and a WONDERFUL taste!!

There are varieties of sambar powder recipes prepared in south Indian kitchen with varying ingredients however, the base flavor of the recipe is almost similar. I am sharing a version which I tried from south indian cookbook along with my mommy’s super tips. 😉

overall, it is very easy to prepare sambar powder at home but make sure to follow the steps properly.

the key for the perfect sambar powder recipe is proper roasting of spices and ofcourse the quality of spices you used.

before you prepare this recipe,

  • make sure your spices are fresh.
  • make sure your spices like coriander seeds,methi seeds are cleaned from stones and insects.
  • make sure your dry red chilies don’t have molds inside.

You can store this sambar powder for 3-4 months in airtight container.The shelf life of the powder is up to 6 -7 months but I usually prepare my masalas for 3 to 4 months only.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/2 tbsp mustard
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tsp coconut dried
  • 1/4 tsp oil optional
  • 4-5 dry red chilies
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tbsp chana dal
Instructions
  1. take a pan and add a drop of oil in it.

  2. add coriander seeds and cumin.

  3. add mustard seeds and curry leaves.

  4. add methi dana /fenugreek seeds and dry red chilies.

  5. add coconut.

  6. add urad dal and chana dal.

  7. roast them on medium flame.

  8. roast until it leaves aroma and turns into golden brown color.

  9. let it cool down.

  10. transfer in a mixer jar.

  11. crush them to a fine powder.

  12. store in airtight container.

  • you can store this masala for 4-5 months.
  • use this in your sambar recipes as per your need.
