how to preserve fresh turmeric recipe with step by step photos- This is a season of fresh turmeric commonly known as haldi. in India, October to January is the period you usually get fresh turmeric in market. like you , i was also wondering this recipe since long. Few of you have requested this recipe some time ago. i apologies for delay as some of you might have forgot about this.actually i was n experiment phase.

Indian kitchen is incomplete without turmeric powder. Turmeric powder is one way to store turmeric for year. This recipe includes dry up turmeric until the moisture is left. After drying it well, turmeric is ready to get powdered form.
I am sharing other version here. I have done some experiment with fresh turmeric. I have read this recipe on one of my fellow blogger.

I used sugar and cinnamon powder here along with fresh turmeric. cinnamon will give nice flavor and because of sugar, this mixture turns in semi liquid syrup like consistency.

Recipe Details for making preserve fresh turmeric below:

  Recipe fresh turmeric preserve-how to store fresh haldi

 Prep Time : 5-7 min | Cook Time : 20 min | Total Time : 25- 27 mins
Main Ingredient : haldi-fresh turmeric | Serves : 1/2 cup preserve [approx] | Cuisine : indian
  • fresh turmeric - 100/150 gm [1/2 cup approx]
  • sugar - 1/4 cup
  • Water - 1/4 cup
  • cinnamon powder - 1/4 tsp OR a pinch
  1. Wash turmeric first. peel the skin of turmeric.
  2. Grate it or finely chop turmeric.
  3. now, take a deep pan.
  4. bring sugar and water in pan . boil for 2 min high flame.
  5. Add grated turmeric in sugar mixture.
  6. allow mixture to boil on high flame until thicken. It takes 10 mins approx.
  7. turn off the flame.
  8. add cinnamon powder and mix.
  9. allow mixture to cool down completely.
  10. store in airtight container.
  11. keep the container in refrigerator.
    • I have store this mixture in refrigerator only. I have no idea how it becomes when you store in room temperature. 
    • I have prepared this mixture one month ago and it is still fresh. however i am still observing the duration of storage.

      1. Hi +Preethi Prasad, first thank you so much for stopping my home,mostly turmeric is used for turmeric milk and as a salad(with sugar). This can be used in turmeric halwa as well which is made specially in winters (upcoming recipe).At current moment-I have two major use 1. turmeric milk and 2. turmerci preserve as it is in form of salad
