Moth Dal is an attempt to make lentils stew using ordinary moth.By this post i will share Step By Step photos.
I am such a big fan of my mom's Dry Matki Subji recipe(i will share soon). You already know that Moth beans are known as Matki.I actually quite confused about the name of the recipe.I made this recipe in liquid daal form so i called it Matki Daal.

If you have planned earlier and soaked the beans then it will be ready in only 20 minutes. While beans are pressure cooking, make rice and you will have healthy, homey dinner or lunch ready in only 30-35 minutes. Moth beans are similar to whole green moong in terms of shape and size. But the color of matki is brownish yellow while moong beans are dark green.
Moth bens are healthy but for healthier version you can use Moth Sprouts as well. for soaking details -Check out my Soaking and Sprouting Guide.
This is very Simple Recipe by means of spices requirements.The regular available spices in your kitchen are used to make this recipe.Like here,I made this recipe using Tomato,Onions and regular Masalas.
This Curry Goes best with Plain Rice, Roti, Paratha .Plain Rice ,Raita and Matki Daal are my favorite combination.

   Matki Masala Dal  -how to make Moth beans curry

Prep Time :10 min
Cook Time : 20 min
Soak Time: 5 hours
Total Time : 30 min + Soaking Time
Main Ingredient : Moth Beans
Serves : 2
Cuisine : Indian

  • Moth beans ,Soaked - 1 cup
  • Onion,chopped - 1 medium size
  • Tomato, Puree - 1 medium size
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Ginger-chili garlic paste - 1tsp(optional)
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Red chili Powder -1 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves- 1 tsp
  • Water - for boiling Moth beans(3 cups approx)
  1.  Boil Matki Beans in pressure cooker for 15-20 min OR 4-5 whistles.Do not forget to add required water in pressure cooker.(3 cups approx will needed). Drain them and keep it aside.While draining ,Do not throw Extra water because we will use it later in recipe.
  2. Heat Oil in pan.
  3. Add Cumin Seeds.When they crackle add Onions.Saute it until brown.
  4. Add Ginger-chili garlic paste and Tomato Puree.
  5. Add salt ,Turmeric Powder,Red chili powder and cook them for 3-4 minutes on high flame.
  6. Add Moth beans and mix them well.
  7. Add 1 cup of Boiled Matki Water that we store while draining Matki into the pan.
  8. Mix them well and boil them 5 minutes.Add water if required.
  9. Add garam Masala and coriander leaves.
  10. Serve Hot with Plain Rice or Roti.

    • While draining ,Do not throw Extra water because we will use it later in recipe. 
    • You can use Moth sprouts as well
    • You can Adjust amount of water to make thick curry.
