Khichdi is originated from gujrat,India but West bengal,Odisha,Bihar,Pakistan have their own variations. It is the preparation from Rice and lentils. In our culture it is treated as super food that babies eats.  
The main ingredients of Plain Khichri are Rice and Yellow| green Moongdal. I have posted traditional gujrati plain Khichdee recipe on this blog HERE.
I am sharing The version of Khichdi today is made from routine spices,Lentils and whole grains.
I have combined Rice,Green moong dal , Bajari and whole wheat.Bajara is known as pearl millet in English.I did not use onions and garlic in this recipe -No onion No Garlic.
Other version of this recipe is Mix veg Masala Khichdi. I will also share this recipe later on blog.
Right now,I am sharing version in which Lentils and Grains are the HEROes. we used to make this recipe in Makrasankranti.
The time required for the preparation is 2 hours because we have to soak Whole Wheat and Pearl millet in warm water before. It is perfect One pot meal and Lunchbox recipe.It is Simple,nutritious recipe.
I also used Ghee here instead of oil for tempering.Fresh Curry leaves with ginger Chili paste enhance the aroma of this khichdi.

Masala Khichdi

Prep Time :2 hours
Cook Time : 15 min
Total Time : 2 hours 15 min
Main Ingredient : Rice,pearl millet,Whole Wheat
Serves : 3
Cuisine : Gujrat

  • Whole wheat /Gehu- 1/2 cup
  • Pearl Millet/Bajara -1/4 cup
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Pigeon pea - 3 tbsp
  • Greenmoong dal - 3 tbsp
  • Salt -to taste
  • Ghee - 4 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 5-6
  • Ginger-Chili paste - 1tbsp
  • Fresh Coriander - for garnishing
  • Turmeric Powder - 2 tsp
  • Garam Masala - a pinch
  • Water - 3 cups for boiling
Method :
  1. Wash Bajra and Gehu and soak them in Warm water separately.
  2. Also wash Rice,Green moong dal,and Toor Dal and soak them togather.
  3. Heat Ghee in pressure Cooker.Mean While Drain lentils and grains.
  4. Add mustard Seeds,When they crackle add Curry leaves and ginger chili paste.
  5. Add Rice with lentils and Wheat with Bajara.
  6. Add Salt,Turmeric Powder,Garam Masala and mix them well.
  7. Add 3 cups of water.
  8. Pressure cook them for 4-5 whistles on medium flame..
  9. Turn off The flame.
  10. Garnish with Coriander.
  11. Serve hot with Butter milk or Lassi.
  • General measurement to cook khichdi is 1:3. i.e If you have 1 cup of Rice+ Lentils mixture then amount of water to be added is 3 cups.
  • you can add amount of water is you want more softness and creaminess in end result but keep in mind that proportion of water content and lentils should be at-least 1:3.
