Hello foodies,

Today I am gonna share one amazing dal recipe which is festive dal made in West bengal.Just like Dal Makhani is a part of every punjabi wedding and festival,Cholar dal is made for special occasions like durga puja,wedding in Bengal.
This is slightly sweet and fragrant dal because of the whole spices used in this recipes.
This is a thick deal accompanied with luchi/puri or kachori.

Main Ingredient: Chana Dal/Split Bengal gram


  • Chana Dal/Split Bengal gram -1 cup
  • Ghee/oil -2 tbsp
  • Salt -to taste
  • Mustard seeds - 1tsp
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Green Cardamom,whole -2-3 nos
  • Cinnamon stick - 1 inch
  • Bay leaves -2 nos
  • Red dry chili - 2 nos
  • Coconut ,Grated - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder -1 tsp
  • Sugar -1/2 tbsp
  • Grama masala - a pinch
  • Coriender,chopped -  for garnish
  • Water -as per need


  1. Soak chana dal in water for 1 hour.
  2. After soaking pressure cook chana dal for 10 mins on medium flame.
  3. Heat ghee in pan.
  4. Add mustard seeds,when seeds crakle add green cardamom ,cinnamon stick,bay leaves,dry red chilies and saute it for a while.
  5. Add grated coconut and saute coconut until light brown.
  6. Add boil chana dal,salt,sugar,tumeric powder,chili powder and garam massala.
  7. Cook daal for 5-6 mins.
  8. Garnish with coriander.
  9. Serve hot with Rice,lichi,paratha,roti....... 

I serve this dal with mix veg.kurma,roti and rice.


  • To reduce soaking time,soak Chana dal in Boiling water
